This code indicates that the engine or body control computer is receiving corrupted, implausible, or missing data from the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) control module over the vehicle's communication network. It is a network/data-validity code, not an ABS hydraulic or wheel-speed fault by itself. The receiving module flagged the ABS module's message as invalid.

What causes it — most likely first

1. ABS control module internal failure

The ABS module itself is the most common source, either failing internally or dropping off the communication bus. This is often accompanied by a hard ABS light and no communication with a scan tool through the ABS module.

2. Wiring or connector fault in ABS circuit

Corroded, loose, or damaged pins at the ABS module connector, or an open/chafed wire in the CAN bus lines to the module, can cause invalid or intermittent data. Water intrusion into the connector is common on some vehicles.

3. Power or ground supply problem to ABS module

If the ABS module is losing battery, ignition, or ground supply intermittently, it will drop off the bus and other modules will report invalid data. A blown ABS fuse or poor ground point can mimic a failed module.

4. CAN bus fault or contention

A shorted or open CAN high/low circuit, or another module corrupting bus traffic, can cause the receiving module to flag ABS data as invalid. This is less common than an ABS-side fault but should be checked when the ABS module itself communicates normally.

5. Receiving control module (PCM/ECM) misinterpreting data

Rarely, the module that sets the U0415 may misinterpret valid ABS data due to internal corruption. This is uncommon and should only be considered after the ABS module, wiring, power/ground, and bus integrity are all verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Read all modules with a scan tool capable of ABS/network communication, not just the engine computer, and record all stored codes.
  2. Attempt to communicate directly with the ABS module; if it will not respond, focus on power, ground, wiring, and the module itself.
  3. Visually inspect the ABS module connector for corrosion, bent or pushed pins, moisture, and damaged wiring; check the ABS fuse(s) and ground points.
  4. Perform CAN bus integrity testing at the ABS module connector: verify termination resistance (~60 ohms across the bus with the key off and modules disconnected) and check for shorts to power or ground.
  5. With the ABS module communicating, monitor live ABS data for implausible or dropped values; wiggle-test wiring while watching for data dropouts.
  6. Only after the ABS module, its power/ground, wiring, and the CAN bus are all proven good, consider the receiving module as a last-resort cause.
