U0132 — Lost Communication Suspension Control Module

U0132 means the engine/powertrain control module (or another module on the vehicle network) can no longer communicate with the Suspension Control Module over the CAN/data bus. When this happens, the module that set the code has stopped receiving expected messages, so ride-control functions may be degraded or disabled.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Wiring or connector fault to the Suspension Control Module

Open, shorted, chafed, or corroded power, ground, or data-bus circuits to the module are the most common cause. Connector pin damage, moisture intrusion, or pushed-back terminals can interrupt communication.

2. Failed Suspension Control Module

Internal damage, water intrusion, or circuit failure inside the module itself can prevent it from powering up or responding on the network.

3. Low system voltage, weak battery, or poor charging

Modules need stable voltage to communicate. A weak battery, failing alternator, or voltage drop during cranking can cause temporary or permanent loss of module communication.

4. CAN bus network fault

Damage to the CAN high and CAN low wires, a short between them, a short to power or ground, or a failed terminating resistor elsewhere on the bus can stop communication with one or more modules.

5. Poor or corroded ground connection

A loose, corroded, or missing ground for the Suspension Control Module can cause intermittent or complete loss of network communication.

6. PCM/ECM internal fault

It is possible but uncommon for the module that set the code to have a network interface failure; this should only be considered after wiring, voltage, and the Suspension Control Module have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm U0132 and record any related U-code communication faults; note whether only the Suspension Control Module is affected or multiple modules are offline
  2. Visually inspect the Suspension Control Module connectors and harness for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, and moisture intrusion; repair any wiring defects
  3. Check battery state of charge and charging system voltage; test module power, ignition feed, and ground circuits against the wiring diagram
  4. Test CAN bus continuity, resistance, and waveform at the Suspension Control Module connector; verify CAN high and CAN low are not shorted together or to power/ground
  5. If wiring, voltage, and network tests are normal, attempt to reflash or replace the Suspension Control Module
  6. Consider PCM/ECM replacement only if all other causes are eliminated and the same communication loss occurs with a known-good Suspension Control Module
