U0085 indicates that the vehicle's onboard network has detected an open circuit on communication bus 'F.' This means the electrical path that allows control modules to share data is broken somewhere along that bus, preventing one or more modules from communicating. It is a wiring/network fault, not typically a sensor or emissions code.

1. Open or broken wire in bus F circuit

A physical break in the communication wire anywhere along bus F is the most common cause. This can result from chafing, corrosion, impact damage, or aging wiring.

2. Corroded, loose, or disconnected connector at a module on bus F

A poor connection at any module's harness connector can interrupt the bus circuit. Water intrusion and pin corrosion are frequent contributors.

3. Failed control module on bus F

A module that has internally failed can open the bus circuit, preventing communication with itself and potentially other modules on the same bus.

4. Damaged wiring harness from rodent, heat, or abrasion

Wiring harness damage from external factors can sever the bus circuit. This is common in areas near heat sources or where harnesses pass through body/chassis points.

5. Faulty splice or junction in the bus F wiring

A failed splice where bus F branches to multiple modules can create an open. These are less common but can be difficult to locate without wiring diagrams.

6. Internal PCM/ECM bus transceiver failure

Rarely, the engine computer's internal communication transceiver can fail, causing an open on the bus. This is uncommon and should only be considered after all wiring and other modules are verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored codes with a scan tool capable of reading all modules, not just the PCM, to identify which modules on bus F are and are not communicating.
  2. Consult the vehicle's wiring diagram to identify which modules are on bus F and the routing of the bus circuit.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of all accessible connectors and wiring on bus F, looking for corrosion, damage, loose pins, or disconnections.
  4. Use a digital multimeter or oscilloscope to check for continuity and signal presence on the bus F circuit at each module connector, working from the known-good end toward the open.
  5. Isolate the open by disconnecting modules on bus F one at a time and rechecking bus signal, to determine whether a module is causing the open or the wiring itself is at fault.
  6. Repair the identified open (wire repair, connector replacement, or module replacement) and retest all modules for communication.

Does U0085 mean I need to replace the PCM?

Why can't my scan tool read some modules with this code?

Because bus F has an open circuit, modules beyond the break cannot communicate with the diagnostic connector. The scan tool will only see modules that are still connected to the functioning portion of the network.

Is this an emissions-related code?

No. U0085 is a communication/network code, not an emissions code. However, if the open bus affects modules involved in emissions control, it could trigger secondary emissions codes.
