This code indicates that a control module on the vehicle's high-speed CAN bus (often the "C" bus) has stopped communicating with the rest of the network. It means data is not being exchanged between one module and the network, not necessarily that the module is dead.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Wiring or connector fault on the CAN-C bus

Open, short to ground/power, or high-resistance connection on the twisted-pair CAN lines is the most common cause of a single module dropping off the bus.

2. Failed or internally faulty control module on the bus

A module that is shorting the CAN high/low lines internally can take itself (and sometimes the whole bus) offline. Isolation testing is required before condemning it.

3. Power or ground loss to a specific module

A missing fuse, relay, ground, or corroded power feed will make a module appear "off" to the network even though the bus wiring is intact.

4. Bus termination or topology issue

Damaged terminating resistors, a poorly installed aftermarket module, or a splice/corrosion issue can disrupt communication on the CAN-C segment.

5. PCM/ECM internal communication controller failure

Rare. The engine computer's CAN transceiver would have to fail without other obvious damage; this should only be considered after the bus and all other modules are proven good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Record all DTCs from every accessible module; U0075 usually appears with companion codes pointing toward the affected node.
  2. Attempt to communicate with each module individually on the CAN-C bus to identify which one is missing.
  3. Inspect connectors, splices, and wiring for the non-communicating module, especially near common corrosion or chafe points.
  4. Check power and ground feeds to the suspect module with a load test, not just a voltmeter.
  5. Measure CAN high/low resistance and waveform at the suspect module connector; isolate sections of the bus to find opens or shorts.
  6. Only after bus integrity, powers, grounds, and all other modules are verified, consider the suspect module or PCM as the failure.
