3. Faulty termination resistor

A missing, open, or incorrect-value termination resistor at either end of Bus B prevents proper signal transmission.

4. Failed module internal transceiver

One module on Bus B has an internal CAN transceiver failure that pulls the bus lines to an open state.

5. Short to power or ground on Bus B lines

A shorted wire to voltage or ground can mimic an open by collapsing the differential signal, though this often sets additional codes.

6. PCM/ECM internal communication circuit fault

Rare; the gateway or PCM/ECM internal Bus B driver circuit fails, but only after wiring, connectors, and other modules are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all DTCs and identify which modules are not communicating on Bus B.
  2. Visually inspect Bus B wiring harness, connectors, and splice packs for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  3. With ignition off, measure resistance between CAN high and CAN low at the DLC or a Bus B connector; expect approximately 60 ohms for a properly terminated CAN bus.
  4. Check Bus B voltage levels (CAN high ~2.5 V recessive, CAN low ~2.5 V recessive) with ignition on; look for stuck-high, stuck-low, or missing signals.
  5. Disconnect modules on Bus B one at a time while monitoring bus resistance/voltage to isolate a faulty node.
  6. If all wiring, connectors, termination, and modules test good, verify PCM/ECM Bus B driver output per manufacturer service information.
