5. PCM/ECM internal CAN transceiver failure

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify battery voltage and ground integrity to ensure proper bus termination voltage.
  2. Visually inspect the CAN bus harness for chafing, pinches, corrosion, or damage, especially near moving parts and connectors.
  3. Measure resistance between CAN-H and CAN-L with the battery disconnected; a reading far below ~60 Ω indicates a short.
  4. Test each line for shorts to power (12 V) and ground; any low resistance points to the fault location.
  5. Systematically disconnect modules (starting with those easiest to access) and re‑measure the bus resistance after each removal to isolate the shorted module or wiring segment.
  6. If wiring and connectors are sound and the short persists with all modules disconnected, suspect an internal transceiver fault in a module or, as a last resort, the PCM/ECM.
