How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan all modules for additional codes; note which modules are missing or have communication errors.
  2. Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose pins, especially near areas prone to chafing or moisture.
  3. Measure resistance between CAN-H and CAN-L at the diagnostic connector (DLC) with the battery disconnected; should be approximately 60 ohms (two 120-ohm resistors in parallel).
  4. Check voltage on CAN-H and CAN-L with key on, engine off; typically CAN-H ~2.5V, CAN-L ~2.5V, with slight variation. Look for shorts to power/ground.
  5. If wiring and resistance are normal, isolate modules one by one by disconnecting them to see if the bus recovers, indicating a failed module.
