P2601 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a performance problem in the electric coolant pump control circuit, specifically that the pump appears stuck off (not running when commanded). On most vehicles this is an electric auxiliary coolant pump or variable-speed electric water pump controlled by the PCM through a dedicated circuit, relay, or driver.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed electric coolant pump

The most common cause. The pump motor, internal electronics, or impeller wears out and the pump stops spinning even when power is supplied, triggering the stuck-off detection.

2. Faulty coolant pump relay

A relay with burned or pitted contacts can fail to deliver power to the pump, so the circuit looks open to the PCM even though the pump itself is good.

3. Wiring, connector, or ground problems

Corroded, loose, chafed, or water-damaged connectors at the pump and a poor engine or chassis ground are a frequent source of this code, especially on pumps mounted low in the engine bay.

4. Blown fuse in the coolant pump circuit

A blown fuse will drop the circuit and the PCM will flag the pump as inoperative. Always check the fuse before replacing parts.

5. Low coolant level or air in the cooling system

Some PCM strategies flag a pump-performance fault if expected coolant flow (inferred from temperature behavior) is not achieved, which can happen with a very low coolant level or persistent air pockets.

6. PCM driver or internal control fault

Rare. The PCM's output stage for the pump can fail, but this should only be considered after the pump, relay, wiring, fuses, and grounds have all been verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm the code and review freeze-frame data; note coolant temperature, pump command status, and whether the fault is current or historical.
  2. Listen for pump operation with the engine cold and again at operating temperature, and verify the pump runs when commanded with a scan tool or by activating it in the bidirectional controls menu.
  3. Check the coolant pump fuse and relay; swap the relay with a known-good identical relay or test it, and inspect the fuse for corrosion on the contacts.
  4. Backprobe the pump connector to check for proper battery voltage, ground, and (on variable-speed pumps) a commanded duty-cycle or PWM signal from the PCM.
  5. Apply direct battery power to the pump (with appropriate fused jumper) to confirm whether the pump itself runs; if it does not, the pump is failed.
  6. If power, ground, and command signal are all present and correct but the pump does not run, monitor pump current draw and only then suspect the PCM driver circuit.

Can I keep driving with P2601?

Will clearing the code fix the problem?
