P2556 indicates the powertrain control module has detected an electrical problem in the engine coolant level sensor or switch circuit. The sensor monitors coolant level in the reservoir or radiator, and the code is set when the signal is missing, out of range, or otherwise implausible. It is a circuit fault, not necessarily a coolant leak, though low or contaminated coolant can affect the reading.

4. Coolant reservoir contamination or corrosion

Corroded contacts inside the reservoir cap or at the sensor mounting point can increase resistance or create a poor ground, affecting sensor operation.

5. PCM fault

A failed PCM input circuit is theoretically possible but very uncommon; it should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and grounds are proven good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify actual coolant level and condition; top off or flush if needed and see if the symptom changes.
  2. Inspect the coolant level sensor connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, or unplugged connectors.
  3. Test the sensor according to manufacturer specifications: check resistance, switch operation, or signal voltage as the coolant level changes.
  4. Check reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector with the key on; repair any supply or ground-side faults.
  5. If all sensor and circuit tests are normal and the code returns, evaluate PCM inputs; do not replace the PCM first.
