P2534 means the powertrain control module has detected a lower-than-expected voltage on the ignition switch circuit that signals the RUN or START position. This input tells the module the key is on and the engine is being requested, so a weak or missing signal can disrupt starting, running, or module wake-up.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty ignition switch electrical portion

Internal contacts wear or burn, causing high resistance or a low-voltage signal to the PCM when the key is in RUN or START.

2. Wiring or connector fault in the ignition circuit

A short to ground, open circuit, corroded terminals, or chafed harness between the ignition switch and the PCM can pull the monitored voltage low.

3. Blown fuse or faulty ignition-feed protection

A blown fuse, fusible link, or poor connection in the circuit that feeds voltage to the ignition switch or the PCM monitor input can set this code.

4. Low system voltage or charging-system problem

A weak battery, poor battery connections, or a failing charging system can reduce the ignition circuit voltage enough to trigger a low-circuit code.

5. Faulty PCM

Rarely, the PCM's internal circuitry that reads the ignition-switch input can fail; this should be considered only after the switch, wiring, and power/ground are verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm P2534 with a scan tool, record freeze-frame data, and clear the code to see if it returns under normal driving or starting conditions.
  2. Visually inspect the ignition switch, related connectors, and harness for corrosion, terminal looseness, chafing, or damage.
  3. With the key in RUN and START, measure the voltage on the ignition switch output circuit and compare it to battery voltage; a significant drop indicates a failing switch or circuit resistance.
  4. Check all fuses and fusible links feeding the ignition circuit, then perform continuity and resistance tests from the ignition switch to the PCM input.
  5. Verify PCM power and ground supplies; only suspect the PCM if the switch, wiring, fuses, and module power/ground all test normal.
