P2436 indicates that the secondary air injection (SAI) system air flow/pressure sensor on Bank 2 is reporting a value outside its expected range or inconsistent with the system's commanded operating state. The SAI system pumps fresh air into the exhaust manifold during cold start to help the catalyst reach operating temperature quickly, and the sensor monitors how much air is actually flowing. The 'range/performance' portion means the signal is plausible enough to be read, but doesn't match what the powertrain control module expects.

1. Faulty SAI air flow/pressure sensor

The sensor itself is the most common failure. It is exposed to heat, moisture, and exhaust contaminants, and its internal element drifts or fails over time, producing an out-of-range signal.

2. Stuck or leaking SAI check valve or combination valve

A one-way check valve that fails to open, or a diverter/combination valve that does not direct air properly, prevents the expected airflow and causes the pressure sensor reading to fall outside specifications.

3. Damaged, disconnected, or carbon-clogged SAI hoses and tubes

Cracked, loose, or carbon-restricted air injection passages and hoses alter the actual airflow the sensor sees, triggering a range/performance fault even with a good sensor.

4. Failed SAI pump or its vacuum control

A weak or non-functioning secondary air pump, or a vacuum leak in the control circuit for the diverter valve, prevents proper airflow and produces a sensor reading that does not match commanded operation.

5. Wiring, connector, or corrosion issues at the sensor

Heat-cycled wiring harnesses and corroded sensor connectors are common on SAI components, producing a distorted or out-of-range signal that mimics a failed sensor.

6. Powertrain control module (PCM)

The PCM is rarely the cause of a range/performance code. A controller fault should only be considered after the sensor, valves, pump, vacuum controls, and wiring have all been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve freeze-frame data and confirm the code sets during cold-start SAI operation; check for related SAI system codes (P0411, P0413, P2440, etc.).
  2. Visually and physically inspect the Bank 2 SAI components: pump, diverter/combination valve, check valves, hoses, and tubes for disconnection, cracking, collapse, or heavy carbon restriction.
  3. Monitor the SAI air flow/pressure sensor PID with a scan tool during a cold start and compare actual readings against expected values; a stuck or unresponsive reading strongly suggests a failed sensor.
  4. Back-probe the sensor connector to check the reference voltage, ground, and signal wires with a multimeter; inspect the connector for corrosion, spread pins, and heat damage.
  5. Command the SAI pump and diverter valve on with a scan tool (or appropriate bidirectional test) and verify pump operation, vacuum control integrity, and that air is actually being delivered to the exhaust manifold.
  6. If a vacuum-operated diverter valve is used, perform a smoke or vacuum test on the SAI control circuit and check the air injection passages to the manifold for leaks or blockage.
