What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty intake air flow position sensor

2. Damaged, chafed, or corroded sensor wiring and connector

Diesel engine bays expose wiring to heat, vibration, oil, and road contamination. Broken insulation, loose pins, green-corrosion on terminals, or moisture intrusion in the connector are all frequent culprits.

3. Loss of 5-volt reference or sensor ground

The sensor requires a stable reference voltage and a clean ground supplied through the PCM harness. Corroded ground points, broken splices, or open circuits in these shared feeds can mimic a failed sensor.

4. Carbon or oil contamination on the sensor element

EGR recirculation, crankcase vapors, and soot can deposit on the sensor and skew its output. Diesel engines with heavy EGR use are particularly prone to this kind of contamination-related code.

5. Intake leaks, restrictions, or mechanical binding of the air control

Unmetered air leaks downstream of the sensor, a clogged air filter, or a sticking throttle/intake control plate can produce readings the PCM interprets as a sensor circuit fault.

6. PCM / ECM internal failure

Although frequently suggested, the engine computer is the least common cause of P2396. A control module failure should be considered only after the sensor, harness, grounds, and intake system have all been thoroughly ruled out through testing.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Connect a scan tool and record all stored codes plus freeze-frame data (engine load, RPM, coolant temperature) at the time the code set, to understand the conditions that triggered it.
  2. Perform a visual and tactile inspection of the intake air flow position sensor, its connector, and the harness back to the PCM, looking for chafing, pin damage, corrosion, moisture, or oil contamination.
  3. With the ignition on and engine off, back-probe the sensor connector and verify reference voltage, signal voltage, and ground against the manufacturer's published specifications.
  4. With the engine running, observe the sensor's live data stream on the scan tool to confirm the reading moves smoothly, stays in range, and tracks commanded throttle or intake changes.
  5. Inspect the intake tract for leaks (smoke or pressure test if available), restrictions, and proper operation of any electronic intake air control actuators.
  6. Only if the sensor, wiring, grounds, and intake system all pass testing should PCM pin-out checks and module-level diagnostics be performed; module replacement is a last resort.
