The secondary circuit is the path that delivers the high-voltage pulse from the coil to the spark plug, so a fault here typically means the coil is not producing or delivering a usable spark on that cylinder. Because ignition is cylinder-specific, this code is almost always accompanied by an engine misfire on the affected cylinder.

1. Failed ignition coil

The coil itself is the single most common cause. Internal shorts, open windings, or cracked insulation in the secondary side prevent proper high-voltage output even though the primary circuit may appear normal.

2. Worn or fouled spark plug

Excessive gap, carbon fouling, oil deposits, or a cracked insulator raise the resistance the secondary circuit must overcome, which the PCM interprets as a secondary circuit malfunction.

3. Damaged spark plug boot or wire

A torn, oil-soaked, or carbon-tracked boot (or a worn plug wire on systems that still use them) leaks high voltage to ground and prevents the full secondary pulse from reaching the plug.

4. Corroded or loose coil electrical connector

Moisture intrusion, corrosion on the coil harness terminals, or an incomplete latch at the connector can produce intermittent or low signals on the primary side, causing the secondary to misfire.

5. Open or shorted wiring in the coil control circuit

Chafed, heat-damaged, or pinned wiring between the PCM and the coil driver, or a short to ground in that circuit, will disrupt the trigger signal and the secondary spark.

6. Faulty PCM or ignition driver

Rare. The internal coil driver in the powertrain control module can fail, but this is only confirmed after every coil, plug, boot, and wiring issue has been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data with a scan tool to confirm P2320 and identify the operating conditions (RPM, load, temperature) when it set, and check whether a cylinder-specific misfire code is also present.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the coil, spark plug, boot, and harness on cylinder G: look for cracks, carbon tracking, oil contamination, corrosion on the connector pins, and evidence of arcing.
  3. Conduct a swap test by moving the suspected coil to a different cylinder, clearing codes, and re-running the engine; if the code or misfire follows the coil, the coil is the failure.
  4. Remove and inspect the spark plug: check gap, insulator condition, and wear pattern. Replace if fouled, cracked, or out of specification, then re-evaluate.
  5. Verify the coil connector has proper battery voltage and a clean ground using a multimeter, and check the control circuit for continuity and short to ground or power between the coil and the PCM.
  6. If wiring and power/ground are good and the coil and plug are known good, evaluate the secondary pattern with an oscilloscope or a known-good in-line spark tester to confirm the coil is firing.
