What causes it — most likely first

1. Short to voltage in coil control circuit

The wiring between the PCM and the affected ignition coil is shorted to another voltage source, causing the PCM to see a high signal on the primary control line.

2. Failed ignition coil

An internal short within the ignition coil's primary side can feed voltage back into the control circuit, triggering the high input code.

3. Corroded or damaged coil connector

A bent, corroded, or pushed-back terminal at the coil or PCM connector can create a high-resistance or shorted condition that the PCM interprets as a high circuit fault.

4. Wiring harness chafing or damage

Chafed insulation along the engine harness can allow the coil control wire to contact a power feed or another circuit.

5. Failed PCM coil driver

Rarely, an internal failure of the PCM's ignition coil driver circuit can cause an incorrect high-voltage reading. This should only be considered after all wiring and the coil are verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan all codes and freeze-frame data to identify which cylinder or coil circuit is flagged.
  2. Visually inspect the affected coil connector, terminals, and nearby harness for corrosion, bent pins, or chafing.
  3. Disconnect the ignition coil and PCM, then perform continuity and short-to-voltage tests on the control circuit.
  4. Swap the suspected coil with a known-good coil on a different cylinder to see if the code follows the coil or stays with the circuit.
  5. If wiring and coil test good, verify PCM power and ground supplies before considering internal PCM driver failure.
