OBD-II code P2251 indicates an open circuit in the O2 sensor negative current control circuit on Bank 1, Sensor 1 (the upstream sensor ahead of the catalytic converter). This circuit is part of the sensor's internal current-pumping control that the engine control module uses to maintain a precise reference across the sensing cell. When the control module cannot detect the expected current flow in that leg of the circuit, it sets this code.

1. Failed Bank 1 Sensor 1 oxygen sensor

The upstream O2 sensor is a wear item that degrades from thermal cycling and contamination. Internal failure of the negative current control element is a common end-of-life failure mode and is the single most likely cause.

2. Open or high resistance in the negative current control wire

3. Corroded, bent, or backed-out pins in the O2 sensor connector

Heat, moisture, and vibration at the exhaust-side connector commonly corrode terminals or allow pins to lose tension, producing an intermittent or hard open in the control circuit.

4. Damaged sensor harness from heat or routing

The upstream sensor harness runs near hot exhaust components. Melted insulation, cracked conduit, or a wire pinched against the exhaust manifold can sever the control circuit.

5. Loss of sensor heater or reference ground

If the sensor's reference ground or heater feed is lost, the negative current control circuit can appear open because the sensor cell cannot complete its pumping action.

6. Engine control module driver fault

An internal open in the module's current-control output stage is rare but possible. It should be considered only after the sensor, wiring, connectors, and grounds have all been verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool, record freeze frame data, and check for related O2 sensor or heater codes that point to a shared wiring fault.
  2. Visually inspect the Bank 1 Sensor 1 connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, heat damage, oil contamination, or loose fit, and repair as found before replacing parts.
  3. Back-probe the sensor connector and measure voltage and continuity on the negative current control circuit, the reference voltage, and the sensor ground with the key on and the engine running.
  4. Evaluate the sensor with a scan tool in live data; a stuck or non-responsive upstream sensor, or one that never reaches operating temperature, supports a sensor failure.
  5. Perform a resistance and continuity test of the negative current control wire from the sensor connector back to the engine control module to isolate an open in the harness.
  6. Only if the sensor, wiring, connectors, and grounds all test good should the engine control module be suspected, and it should be tested per manufacturer procedure before replacement.
