P2006 indicates that the intake manifold runner control (IMRC) system on bank 1 is reporting the runner flaps are stuck in the closed position, or the actuator cannot move them to the commanded open position. The engine computer monitors actuator position or feedback and sets this code when the observed state does not match the commanded state.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty intake manifold runner control actuator

The electric motor or vacuum solenoid that moves the runner flaps can fail internally, preventing the flaps from opening. This is the most common direct cause of P2006.

2. Carbon buildup or mechanical binding

Oil residue and carbon can make the runner flaps or shaft stick in the closed position even though the actuator is working. Cleaning and freeing the mechanism often resolves the issue.

3. Broken or disconnected linkage

The rods, levers, or cables that transfer actuator motion to the runner flaps can break, pop off, or seize, leaving the flaps closed while the actuator appears to move.

4. Vacuum control problem

On vacuum-actuated systems, a leaking hose, faulty vacuum solenoid, or restricted vacuum supply can prevent the actuator from developing enough force to open the runners.

5. Wiring or connector fault

Corroded, damaged, or poorly connected wires to the actuator or position sensor can cause incorrect position signals or weak actuator operation.

6. Powertrain control module failure

A rare PCM fault may miscommand or misread the IMRC system; this should be considered only after mechanical, vacuum, and wiring causes have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the intake manifold runner linkage, actuator, and vacuum hoses for breakage, disconnection, or binding.
  2. Command the IMRC actuator on and off with a scan tool while watching the linkage and listening for actuator movement.
  3. Remove and inspect the intake manifold runner flaps and shafts for carbon buildup, scoring, or sticking; clean or free them as needed.
  4. Check actuator and position-sensor wiring for continuity, shorts, and proper voltage/ground; repair any harness issues.
  5. Test or compare the actuator/solenoid function against specifications; replace only if it fails testing.
  6. If all mechanical, vacuum, and electrical causes are eliminated, verify PCM calibration and consider module diagnosis last.
