OBD-II code P1457 indicates the engine control module could not generate the expected vacuum level inside the fuel tank during the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system self-test. The most common underlying problem is a leak somewhere in the EVAP system or a fuel-vapor component that will not seal properly, allowing air to enter and preventing the tank from holding a vacuum.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Loose, damaged, or worn fuel filler cap

A cap that does not seal tightly is the single most common cause of P1457 and is the correct first item to inspect before going further.

2. Cracked, disconnected, or deteriorated EVAP hoses

Rubber lines between the tank, canister, and valves can split, collapse, or pull loose from their fittings, allowing air to leak in during the vacuum test.

3. Failed EVAP vent valve

If the vent valve will not close fully when commanded, the tank cannot be sealed off and vacuum cannot be developed.

4. Failed EVAP purge valve or purge-side leak

A purge valve stuck open, or a leak between the purge valve and intake, prevents the system from holding the target vacuum.

5. Saturated or damaged charcoal canister

Liquid fuel in the canister or physical damage from a rear-end impact can create a leak path or block airflow in a way that disrupts the vacuum test.

6. Engine control module (PCM) fault

PCM failure is a rare cause of P1457; the controller is usually the last thing to suspect once all hoses, the cap, and the EVAP valves have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Tighten or temporarily replace the fuel filler cap, clear the code, and re-run the EVAP self-test to see if it returns.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of all EVAP hoses, quick-connect fittings, and the canister for cracks, kinks, or loose connections.
  3. Use a smoke machine to pressurize the EVAP system and pinpoint any leak that prevents vacuum from being held.
  4. Command the vent and purge valves with a scan tool while listening for proper operation and checking electrical signals.
  5. Inspect the charcoal canister and fuel tank sealing surfaces for fuel saturation or physical damage.
  6. Only after the above have been eliminated should PCM diagnosis and possible reprogramming or replacement be considered.
