P0710 indicates a problem with the transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor electrical circuit. The powertrain or transmission control module detects a signal that is out of specification, intermittent, or missing from the sensor that reports transmission fluid temperature.

1. Failed transmission fluid temperature sensor

The sensor itself can drift out of calibration, short internally, or open, sending an implausible voltage or no signal to the control module.

2. Wiring or connector faults

Corroded, damaged, chafed, or loose terminals in the sensor harness can cause intermittent opens, shorts to ground or power, or high resistance in the TFT circuit.

3. Transmission fluid condition or overheating

4. Internal transmission harness or pass-through connector issue

On units where the sensor is inside the transmission, faults in the internal harness, pass-through connector, or valve body can interrupt the signal path.

5. PCM or TCM internal failure

Rarely, the control module may misread a good signal due to an internal reference-voltage or input-circuit fault; this should only be considered after the sensor and wiring are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data; note whether P0710 is current, pending, or intermittent.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition; correct the level and inspect for burning, contamination, or discoloration.
  3. Inspect the TFT sensor connector and external wiring for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, and proper terminal tension.
  4. Measure the sensor resistance and output voltage against the manufacturer temperature/voltage chart; verify it changes smoothly as fluid warms.
  5. Verify sensor reference voltage and ground from the control module; if the sensor and wiring test good but the module still reports an implausible value, evaluate the PCM/TCM only as a last resort.
