P0704 — Clutch Switch Input Circuit

Generic OBD-II · all makesPowertrain (engine & transmission)

The PCM has detected an implausible or erratic signal from the clutch pedal position switch circuit, which reports whether the clutch is depressed or released. This input is used for starter interlock logic, cruise control cancellation, and deceleration fuel-cutoff strategies on manual transmission vehicles.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty clutch pedal position switch

The internal contacts wear, corrode, or carbon-track, preventing consistent continuity when the pedal is pressed or released.

2. Wiring or connector faults

Open circuits, shorts to ground or power, or high resistance in the harness between the switch and PCM due to chafing, moisture intrusion, or pin corrosion.

3. Misadjusted or damaged switch mounting

The switch may be loose on its bracket or the pedal stop may be worn, preventing full plunger travel and causing intermittent contact.

4. Aftermarket device interference

Poorly integrated remote start systems or alarms that interrupt the clutch circuit can introduce resistance or voltage spikes that confuse the PCM.

5. PCM input circuit failure

Rarely, the internal pull-up or sensing circuit within the PCM fails to recognize a valid switch signal despite correct voltage at the connector.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the clutch switch, connector, and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, chafing, or terminal push-outs.
  2. Verify mechanical integrity: ensure the switch is securely mounted and the pedal arm fully depresses the plunger without over-travel.
  3. Test the switch with a multimeter: check for continuity across terminals or voltage output at the connector while cycling the pedal.
  4. Disconnect any aftermarket modules spliced into the clutch circuit and retest to rule out signal interference.
  5. Back-probe the PCM connector to confirm the signal arrives at the module; consider PCM replacement only if the switch, wiring, and all connectors test normal.

Frequently asked

Can I drive with a P0704 code?

Generally yes, though you may experience intermittent no-start conditions if the starter interlock is affected, or cruise control may not function properly.

Is the engine computer (PCM) usually at fault?

No. The physical switch, wiring, or adjustment is the cause in the vast majority of cases. PCM failure is extremely rare for this circuit and should only be considered after all other possibilities are eliminated.

Why does this code affect cruise control?

The PCM uses the clutch switch input to immediately disengage cruise control when the pedal is pressed; a fault in this circuit may prevent cruise engagement or cause it to ignore the clutch input.

Does this code apply to automatic transmissions?

No. P0704 is specific to manual transmission vehicles equipped with a clutch pedal position switch.
