P0634 — Control Module Internal Temperature Too High

P0634 means the powertrain control module (PCM) has sensed its own internal temperature rising above a preset limit. The PCM uses an internal temperature sensor to protect itself from overheating; when the reading is too high it stores this code and may illuminate the Check Engine Light.

1. High ambient temperature or poor PCM ventilation

The PCM is located in an area that can become excessively hot (e.g., near exhaust, lacking airflow, or blocked by debris), causing its internal temperature to rise.

6. PCM/ECM internal failure (rare)

A genuine hardware failure of the control module itself can cause overheating, but this is uncommon and should be considered only after other causes are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan the vehicle for all stored codes and review freeze‑frame data to confirm P0634 and note any related codes.
  2. Visually inspect the PCM location for obstructions, dirt, or missing heat shields that could impede airflow.
  3. Measure the ambient temperature around the PCM with an infrared thermometer; compare it to the PCM's reported temperature via live data if available.
  4. Test the PCM's power and ground circuits for correct voltage, resistance, and continuity according to the service manual.
  5. Monitor the PCM internal temperature sensor reading while the engine is idling and under load; a persistently high reading despite normal ambient temperature suggests a sensor or internal PCM fault.
