P0623 — Generator Lamp Control Circuit

P0623 indicates a fault in the generator (alternator) charging-warning-lamp control circuit. The engine computer monitors the circuit that drives the battery/charge indicator and has detected a voltage, continuity, or response problem. It is a circuit code rather than a direct charging-output performance code.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty alternator/generator or internal lamp-control circuit

The alternator's lamp-control (often 'L') terminal or internal regulator can fail, causing the warning-lamp circuit signal to be out of range or unresponsive.

2. Open, shorted, or high-resistance wiring/connectors in the lamp control circuit

Corroded, chafed, or loose terminals, poor grounds, or short-to-power/ground in the harness between the alternator, cluster, and PCM are common real-world causes.

3. Instrument panel cluster or warning-lamp driver fault

A failed cluster bulb, LED driver, or internal cluster circuit that receives or displays the generator-lamp signal can set this code.

4. Damaged or corroded alternator or PCM connector pins

Terminal spread, moisture intrusion, or burned pins at either end of the circuit can interrupt the lamp-control signal.

5. Faulty PCM/ECM

The PCM is rarely the root cause for this circuit code; it should be considered only after wiring, connector, alternator, and cluster tests are normal.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify battery voltage, alternator output, and whether the charge warning lamp behaves normally at key-on and during running.
  2. Visually inspect the alternator connector, related harness, and grounds for corrosion, chafing, or terminal damage.
  3. Test the generator lamp control circuit for continuity, correct voltage, shorts-to-ground, and shorts-to-power using the vehicle wiring diagram and a multimeter.
  4. Check the alternator/generator lamp-control terminal response; bench-test or substitute the alternator if circuit tests pass but the signal is abnormal.
  5. If all components and wiring are normal, evaluate the PCM/ECM and software; PCM replacement is uncommon for P0623.
