P0590 means the powertrain control module has detected that one of the cruise-control multifunction switch input circuits—labeled "B" by the manufacturer—is showing a continuous or implausible signal, as if a button is stuck or the circuit is electrically latched. The PCM compares the switch inputs against expected logic states; when one input remains active when it should change or be off, this code sets. It typically points to the steering-wheel-mounted cruise switches, the wiring that carries their signals, or the clockspring, rather than the engine computer itself.

1. Faulty or internally stuck cruise-control multifunction switch

The button assembly itself is the most common source. Internal contacts can short, corrode, or mechanically stick from age, heat, or liquid exposure, causing the PCM to see a constant input.

2. Failed clockspring or steering-column wiring harness

Because cruise-control signals pass through the rotating clockspring, broken or shorted ribbon circuits inside it can make the input appear stuck to the PCM.

3. Wiring short, open, or chafe between the switch and PCM

A wire shorted to power or ground, or an open circuit in the steering column or dash harness, can hold the circuit at one voltage and trigger the stuck-circuit logic.

4. Corrosion or moisture in the switch connector

Liquid intrusion at the steering-wheel switch connector can bridge terminals, creating a constant signal that mimics a pressed or stuck button.

5. PCM or software fault

This is uncommon. Only consider the PCM after the switch, clockspring, and all wiring have tested good, because the module rarely fails for this specific input circuit.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve and document all stored codes, then clear P0590 and operate the cruise-control buttons to see if the code returns immediately or under specific button presses.
  2. Visually inspect the cruise-control switch/buttons for physical sticking, damage, or signs of liquid intrusion, and confirm each button releases fully.
  3. Use a scan tool to view live cruise-control switch data while pressing each button; look for an input that does not change state or shows an implausible combination of signals.
  4. Inspect the clockspring and the wiring harness between the steering wheel and column for opens, shorts, or damage; measure resistance and continuity as specified by the manufacturer.
  5. Check all related connectors for corrosion, backed-out pins, or terminal fretting, and clean or repair them as needed.
