Code P0586 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an open circuit in the cruise control vent control solenoid circuit. This solenoid is part of the vacuum-operated cruise control servo and is responsible for venting vacuum to release or modulate throttle hold. An open means the PCM cannot complete the electrical path to that solenoid.

1. Failed vent control solenoid

The cruise control vent solenoid inside the servo assembly can develop an internal open coil over time, breaking the electrical circuit the PCM expects to see.

2. Wiring harness open or damage

Chafed, broken, or rodent-damaged wiring between the PCM and the cruise servo can create an open in the vent control circuit.

3. Corroded or disconnected connector

The connector at the cruise control servo or an intermediate junction can have pushed-out pins, corrosion, or poor contact that reads as an open circuit.

4. Blown fuse or open in power feed

A blown fuse supplying the cruise control solenoids can cause an open-circuit condition on the vent control line, though this may also set related cruise codes.

5. PCM driver failure (rare)

An internal open in the PCM's solenoid driver circuit is possible but uncommon and should only be considered after all wiring, connectors, and the solenoid are verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and check for any other cruise control or vacuum-system related codes that may narrow the diagnosis.
  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the PCM and the cruise control servo for chafing, breaks, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
  3. Disconnect the cruise servo connector and measure resistance across the vent control solenoid terminals to check for an internal open coil; compare to specification.
  4. Perform a continuity test from the servo connector back to the PCM connector to identify any open in the wiring path.
  5. Check the fuse that supplies the cruise control solenoid circuit and replace if blown, then investigate why it failed.
  6. Only after wiring, connectors, fuse, and solenoid are all confirmed good, evaluate the PCM driver circuit as a last resort.
