P0545 indicates the engine control module has detected a voltage signal from the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor on Bank 1 Sensor 1 that is below the expected minimum threshold. This sensor monitors exhaust temperature before the turbocharger or catalytic converter to protect emissions components. A low circuit signal typically means an open circuit, short to ground, or sensor internal failure.

The sensor element has degraded or failed internally, producing a resistance value that reads as a low voltage signal to the control module.

Oxidation, moisture intrusion, or a spread terminal at the sensor or module connector increases resistance and distorts the signal.

4. Exhaust leak near sensor

A leak upstream of the sensor allows ambient air to cool the probe, causing a lower-than-expected temperature reading that may be interpreted as a circuit fault.

5. ECM/PCM circuit fault

Internal driver or pull-up resistor failure in the control module is possible but rare; verify all external wiring and sensor integrity before suspecting the module.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for additional codes and review freeze-frame data to identify operating conditions when the fault set.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor, wiring harness, and connectors for heat damage, chafing, corrosion, or disconnection.
  3. Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance at ambient temperature; compare to manufacturer specifications.
  4. Check for reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector with the key on, engine off.
  5. Perform a continuity and short-to-ground test on the signal wire between the sensor connector and the ECM/PCM.
  6. If all wiring and sensor tests pass, evaluate the control module's EGT input circuit using a known-good sensor or simulation tool.
