P0516 means the powertrain control module has detected a voltage signal from the battery temperature sensor that is lower than the calibrated range. This typically indicates the sensor or its circuit is reading near zero volts, often due to an internal short or a short to ground. The PCM uses this data to help regulate charging voltage, so an inaccurate signal can disrupt battery management.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty battery temperature sensor

The internal thermistor can short or drift out of specification, producing a permanently low signal voltage that the PCM interprets as an implausible temperature.

2. Signal circuit shorted to ground

Chafed, melted, or pinched wiring can allow the sensor signal wire to contact the vehicle frame or another ground path, pulling the circuit voltage to near zero.

3. Corroded or damaged connector

Moisture, salt, or debris inside the sensor or harness connector can bridge terminals or degrade pin integrity, creating a low-resistance path that mimics a short.

4. Sensor or harness physically damaged

Impact, improper routing, or a dislodged sensor can allow the component or its wiring to touch metal surfaces, altering circuit resistance and signal voltage.

5. PCM internal fault

A rare malfunction in the control module’s internal pull-up or monitoring circuit can set this code, but this should only be considered after the sensor and wiring have been thoroughly tested and verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the battery temperature sensor, connector, and wiring for corrosion, chafing, pin damage, or loose connections.
  2. Compare live data or a direct voltage measurement at the sensor to manufacturer specifications for the current underhood temperature.
  3. With the sensor disconnected, test the signal circuit for unwanted continuity to ground to confirm or rule out a harness short.
  4. Measure the sensor’s resistance and compare it to the manufacturer’s temperature/resistance chart; replace the sensor if it is out of range.
  5. If the sensor and all wiring test normal, verify PCM reference voltage and ground to the circuit; consider a control-module fault only as a last resort.
