P0452 indicates the evaporative emission (EVAP) system pressure sensor — commonly called the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor — is reporting a signal voltage below the range the engine control module expects. This typically means the sensor is detecting an unusually low (vacuum) pressure in the EVAP system, which can be caused by a real leak, a sensor fault, or a wiring problem.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Loose, missing, or deteriorated fuel filler cap

The fuel cap is the most frequent cause of EVAP pressure faults. A worn seal, cracked cap, or cap that isn't fully tightened allows ambient air in and lets the FTP sensor read a vacuum/pressure abnormality.

2. Damaged, cracked, or disconnected EVAP hoses

Rubber hoses between the tank, canister, purge valve, and FTP sensor dry-rot, split, or get pinched. A leak anywhere in this sealed circuit will skew the FTP sensor reading low.

3. Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor itself

The sensor's internal diaphragm or electronics can fail, producing a stuck-low or shorted signal even when the EVAP system is intact. Sensor voltage at key-off with the cap on should normally sit near 2.5 V.

4. Damaged wiring or corroded connector at the FTP sensor

Chafed wires, broken harness retainers, or green/corroded pins at the sensor's 3-wire connector can pull the signal line low and mimic a sensor failure.

5. Stuck-open purge or vent valve, or saturated charcoal canister

A purge valve stuck open or a fuel-saturated canister can pull sustained vacuum on the EVAP circuit, driving the FTP reading low. Less common than cap or hose faults.

6. Engine control module (PCM/ECM) internal fault

Genuine PCM failures causing P0452 are rare. Drivers are sometimes steered toward a computer replacement for this code, but the PCM should be considered a last resort only after every other cause has been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm the code with a scan tool and check for related EVAP codes (P0451, P0453, P0455, P0456) that can narrow down the fault area.
  2. Visually inspect and functionally test the fuel filler cap: verify it clicks fully, the O-ring is intact, and the cap is the correct part for the vehicle. Retest the system after a confirmed-good cap is installed.
  3. Connect a scan tool and monitor FTP sensor voltage with the key on, engine off, fuel cap installed. A healthy reading is typically near 2.5 V; a value pinned near 0 V points to a sensor, wiring, or large leak issue.
  4. Perform a smoke test on the EVAP system (with the cap sealed) to locate any leak in hoses, the canister, the vent valve, or around the fuel filler neck.
  5. Back-probe the FTP sensor connector to check reference voltage, ground, and signal wire integrity. Repair any chafed, broken, or corroded circuits and retest.
  6. Command the purge and vent valves with the scan tool to verify they open and close properly, and inspect the charcoal canister for fuel saturation or physical damage.

Is it safe to keep driving with P0452?

Yes, in most cases. P0452 is an emissions-related code and rarely affects drivability. The vehicle can usually be driven normally, but the underlying leak (if any) should be repaired so fuel vapors are not released to atmosphere.

Will simply replacing the gas cap fix P0452?

Often it does, because a loose or worn cap is the single most common cause. However, if the code returns after a known-good cap is installed, the EVAP system needs further testing — typically a smoke test — to find a hose, valve, or sensor fault.

Can P0452 be cleared without fixing the problem?

The code can be erased with a scan tool or by disconnecting the battery, but if the underlying leak or fault is not repaired, the MIL will usually return after one or more drive cycles. P0452 is also flagged as a readiness monitor, so the vehicle may fail an emissions inspection until the EVAP system runs and passes its self-test.

I've been told the PCM needs to be replaced for P0452 — is that correct?

Almost never. The PCM is one of the least likely causes of P0452. The vast majority of cases are resolved by replacing a fuel cap, repairing a hose, fixing a connector, or replacing the FTP sensor. Replacing the engine computer for P0452 without first ruling out caps, hoses, the sensor, and wiring is a common and expensive mistake.
