P0428 — Catalyst Temperature Sensor Circuit High Bank 1 Sensor 1

P0428 means the powertrain control module has detected a voltage signal from the Bank 1 catalyst temperature sensor that is higher than the calibrated limit. This sensor monitors exhaust temperature near the catalytic converter. A circuit-high reading usually points to an open sensor, a short to voltage in the wiring, or a compromised ground circuit rather than a catalyst efficiency failure.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty catalyst temperature sensor

An internal open circuit in the thermistor raises resistance, which the PCM interprets as an abnormally high signal voltage and sets the code.

2. Signal wire shorted to voltage or open ground

The sensor signal circuit may be rubbed through and contacting a voltage source, or the sensor ground return may be open, causing the voltage to rail high.

3. Connector corrosion or terminal damage

Heat cycling and moisture near the exhaust can push out pins, corrode terminals, or create partial opens that result in a high-voltage reading.

4. Exhaust heat damaging wiring harness

Prolonged exposure to excessive exhaust temperatures can degrade wire insulation and conductors near the sensor, leading to a short or open in the circuit.

5. PCM internal fault

A rare internal failure in the PCM’s signal processing or reference voltage circuit could cause an erroneous high reading, but this is not a typical cause.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the catalyst temperature sensor, its connector, and the nearby harness for heat damage, chafing, corrosion, or fluid intrusion.
  2. Compare the sensor’s electrical resistance to the manufacturer specification for the current exhaust temperature; an open or infinite reading indicates a failed sensor.
  3. With the sensor disconnected and the key on, measure voltage on the sensor side of the harness; if the signal remains high, trace the circuit for a short to voltage or an open ground.
  4. Perform continuity and short-to-power tests on the signal and ground wires between the sensor and the PCM while wiggling the harness to find intermittent faults.
  5. If the sensor and all wiring test normal, verify PCM software calibration and consider PCM evaluation only as a last resort.
