P0412 — Air System Switching Valve Circuit

P0412 indicates the engine computer has detected an electrical problem in the secondary air injection switching valve control circuit, not necessarily a mechanical failure of the valve itself. The switching valve is part of the secondary air injection system, which pumps fresh air into the exhaust during cold starts to reduce emissions and help the catalytic converter light off faster.

1. Failed or stuck secondary air switching valve

The valve itself commonly fails electrically or mechanically due to moisture, carbon, and exhaust heat exposure, causing the control circuit to read out of range.

2. Wiring or connector damage at the switching valve

Corroded, chafed, or disconnected wiring and terminals in the valve circuit can cause an open, short, or high-resistance condition that sets the code.

3. Blown fuse or faulty relay in the air injection circuit

The air injection pump and switching valve are typically fused and relay-controlled; a blown fuse or failed relay can interrupt the circuit.

4. Moisture or carbon intrusion in the air injection plumbing

Water or soot entering the valve or hoses can cause it to stick or draw abnormal current, which the computer interprets as a circuit fault.

5. Failed engine computer (PCM/ECM)

Very rare; the control module driver for the switching valve could fail internally, but this should only be considered after the valve, wiring, relay, and fuse are verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Clear the code and cold-start the engine to see if P0412 returns.
  2. Inspect the switching valve connector for corrosion, bent pins, or loose fit.
  3. Check the air injection fuse and relay; swap or test as applicable.
  4. Perform a visual and electrical check of the wiring harness between the valve and the PCM for opens, shorts, and chafing.
  5. Command the switching valve with a scan tool, if supported, and confirm voltage and ground at the valve connector.
  6. If circuit voltage and ground are correct and the valve does not operate, replace or test the valve before considering the PCM.
