P0357 — Ignition Coil G Primary Control Circuitopen

Generic OBD-II · all makesPowertrain (engine & transmission)

Code P0357 indicates that the engine computer has detected an open circuit in the primary control side of the ignition coil designated as 'G' (typically cylinder 7). This means the circuit that commands the coil to fire is electrically broken or disconnected, preventing the coil from operating and causing a misfire on that cylinder.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed ignition coil

The internal primary winding of the ignition coil has failed open, breaking the electrical circuit inside the component itself.

2. Open or broken wiring

The signal wire between the engine computer and the coil is broken, chafed, or disconnected, interrupting the circuit.

3. Poor electrical connection

Corroded, pushed-back, or loose terminals in the ignition coil connector prevent the electrical signal from completing its path.

4. Blown fuse

A blown fuse in the ignition coil power feed circuit can cause an open condition, though this often affects multiple coils simultaneously.

5. Failed engine computer (PCM/ECM)

The internal driver circuit inside the engine computer has failed open and can no longer ground the coil, which is a rare occurrence.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for all stored codes and record freeze frame data to confirm P0357 and check for accompanying misfire codes.
  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the cylinder 7 ignition coil for obvious damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
  3. Test for battery voltage at the coil connector's power circuit with the key in the ON position.
  4. Check for the PCM control signal at the coil connector using a test light or oscilloscope while cranking the engine.
  5. Swap the suspected ignition coil with a known good coil from an adjacent cylinder to see if the misfire or code follows the coil.
  6. Perform a continuity test on the wiring between the coil connector and the PCM if the coil and connector test fine, to locate a hidden open in the harness.

Frequently asked

What cylinder does ignition coil 'G' refer to?

The designation 'G' typically refers to cylinder 7, but the exact mapping varies by vehicle make, model, and engine layout. Always consult the specific service manual for the vehicle to identify which cylinder is assigned to coil G.

Is it safe to drive with code P0357?

It is not recommended. Driving with a misfiring cylinder can dump unburned fuel into the exhaust, which can rapidly overheat and permanently damage the catalytic converter.

Does P0357 mean my engine computer (PCM/ECM) is bad?

Rarely. While a failed PCM driver can cause this code, the vast majority of the time the cause is a failed ignition coil or a wiring/connector issue. The PCM should only be suspected after the coil, connector, and wiring have been thoroughly tested and confirmed to be good.

Can a bad spark plug cause code P0357?

No. A bad spark plug will cause a misfire but will not set an open circuit code for the primary control circuit. However, a severely worn spark plug can overwork the ignition coil and contribute to its premature failure.
