P0335 — Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit

P0335 means the powertrain control module has detected an electrical malfunction in the crankshaft position sensor circuit. The sensor reports the crankshaft’s exact position and rotational speed so the computer can manage ignition timing and fuel injection. When the expected signal is absent, intermittent, or implausible, the code stores and engine operation is compromised.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty crankshaft position sensor

Internal coil winding or circuitry failure from heat cycling and vibration is the most common reason for signal loss, producing an erratic or absent waveform.

2. Wiring or connector defect

Chafed insulation, corrosion at terminals, or poor pin fit in the harness disrupts voltage reference, ground return, or the signal path between the sensor and control module.

3. Reluctor ring or air gap issue

A damaged, cracked, or incorrectly installed tone wheel, or excessive mounting clearance, prevents the sensor from detecting regular magnetic pulses.

4. Sensor contamination or damage

Oil saturation, metal debris accumulation, or physical impact on the sensor tip can weaken or distort the generated signal.

5. PCM malfunction

A rare control module fault may fail to send sensor reference voltage or misinterpret a valid signal, but this should only be considered after hardware and wiring are proven sound.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for related codes and review freeze-frame data to confirm whether the fault is constant or intermittent.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor, connector, and harness for oil contamination, corrosion, chafing, or terminal damage.
  3. Measure sensor resistance and, if possible, capture a waveform with an oscilloscope during cranking to verify output.
  4. Check continuity and perform a short-to-ground test on each wire between the sensor and the PCM connector.
  5. Inspect the reluctor ring for cracks, chips, or looseness and verify proper sensor mounting depth and air gap.
  6. Confirm PCM power and ground circuits; consider module evaluation only after the sensor, wiring, and tone wheel have been ruled out.

Can I keep driving with a P0335 code?

It is not advisable. The engine may stall without warning or fail to restart, which can be dangerous on the road.

My mechanic says the PCM needs replacement. Is that true?
