P0329 indicates that the powertrain control module has detected an intermittent or erratic signal from the knock sensor circuit, meaning the sensor’s voltage or response is cutting in and out rather than remaining steady. The knock sensor monitors engine-block vibration to detect abnormal combustion, and an unreliable circuit prevents the module from accurately adjusting ignition timing to protect the engine.

5. PCM input circuit failure

A rare internal fault in the control module’s knock-signal processing circuit can mimic a sensor problem, but this should only be suspected after the sensor and entire harness are proven good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve freeze-frame data and confirm P0329 is the primary code before inspecting the sensor and harness.

  3. Verify the sensor is tightened to the specified torque and that the mounting surface is clean and flat.
  4. Perform continuity, resistance, and short-to-ground tests on the sensor and circuit while gently wiggling the harness to expose intermittent opens or shorts.
  5. Use a scan tool to observe live knock-sensor data, or tap the engine block near the sensor while monitoring for expected signal response.
