P0280 — Cylinder 7 Injector Circuit High

OBD-II code P0280 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an abnormally high voltage signal in the fuel injector control circuit for cylinder 7. A 'high' reading most often points to an open-circuit condition, meaning current is not flowing through the injector as expected, which typically prevents that injector from delivering fuel.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed cylinder 7 fuel injector (open coil)

The most common cause. An open winding in the injector solenoid prevents current flow, so the driver voltage in the circuit stays high. Resistance typically reads as infinite or far outside specification.

2. Corroded, loose, or contaminated injector connector

Heat, vibration, oil, and coolant exposure frequently degrade the two-pin injector connector, producing high resistance or an open circuit that the PCM sees as a high-voltage condition.

3. Damaged or broken wiring in the injector harness

Chafing, heat damage near exhaust components, rodent damage, or a pulled harness can break the injector feed or control wire, opening the circuit and triggering the code.

4. Poor engine or injector harness ground

A corroded ground point or high resistance in the ground side of the injector circuit can prevent the driver from completing its path, raising the sensed voltage.

5. PCM injector driver failure

Possible but uncommon. The PCM's driver transistor for cylinder 7 could be shorted or open internally, but this is typically identified only after the injector and wiring have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Record freeze frame data and scan for related codes, especially P0307 (cylinder 7 misfire) and other injector or misfire codes that may help confirm the affected circuit.
  2. Visually inspect the cylinder 7 injector connector and harness for corrosion, oil saturation, pushed-back pins, broken locking tabs, or chafed insulation. Re-seat the connector and clear the code to retest.
  3. Unplug the injector and measure its coil resistance with a multimeter; compare to the manufacturer's specification. An open (OL) or out-of-range reading confirms a failed injector.
  4. With the connector backprobed and the key on (or while cranking), measure the voltage and ground signals at the injector harness to confirm the PCM is actually switching the driver and providing a proper reference.
  5. If accessible, swap the cylinder 7 injector with a known-good cylinder and clear codes. If the fault follows the injector, replace it; if it stays on cylinder 7, the problem is wiring or the driver.
  6. Perform a voltage drop and continuity test on the injector feed and control wires back to the PCM connector. Only after all wiring and the injector are confirmed good should the PCM be suspected.

Is it safe to keep driving with P0280?

Short trips to a repair facility are usually fine, but the cylinder will be running lean or not at all, which can overheat the catalyst over time and reduce power. Prolonged driving with an active misfire on the same cylinder is not recommended.

Will I need to replace the PCM for this code?

Almost never. P0280 is overwhelmingly caused by the injector itself or its connector and wiring, not the engine computer. Replacing the PCM is expensive and usually does not fix the problem unless the wiring and injector have already been verified good.

Do I have to replace the fuel injector, or can the connector be the only issue?

Sometimes the connector or harness is the only fault, especially if corrosion or a backed-out pin is found. If coil resistance tests within spec and the connector is restored, the code may clear without replacing the injector.

Why is the code only on cylinder 7 and not others?

Each injector has its own dedicated driver in the PCM and its own pair of wires back to the connector. A fault specific to cylinder 7 (one bad coil, one damaged wire, or one corroded pin) will only affect that circuit, while the other cylinders continue to operate normally.
