Code P0226 indicates that the powertrain control module has detected a signal from the throttle/pedal position sensor 'C' circuit that falls outside the expected range or does not correlate properly with the other pedal position sensors. This sensor is part of a redundant accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor system used to monitor driver demand in electronic throttle control systems. A range/performance fault means the signal is present but implausible, rather than being entirely absent.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed accelerator pedal position sensor

The APP sensor itself is the most common failure point. Internal wear, electrical degradation, or mechanical binding within the sensor can cause the 'C' channel signal to drift out of its expected range.

2. Wiring or connector fault in sensor C circuit

Corroded, loose, or damaged pins and wiring between the APP sensor and the PCM can introduce resistance or intermittent connections that distort the sensor signal.

3. Throttle body or related throttle-position correlation issue

On some vehicles, P0226 can be set if the APP sensor C signal does not correlate with throttle body position feedback. A sticking or dirty throttle body may contribute to correlation failures.

4. Pedal assembly mechanical binding

Physical obstruction, worn pedal pivot points, or a binding return spring can cause the pedal position sensor to report an implausible travel range.

5. PCM/ECM internal fault

Failure of the input circuitry inside the control module is rare. It should only be considered after all sensor, wiring, and mechanical causes have been conclusively ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan all codes and record freeze-frame data; note whether companion APP sensor codes (P0220, P0221, P0222, etc.) are present, as multiple APP codes often point to a shared wiring or sensor issue.
  2. Inspect the APP sensor connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, chafing, or loose terminals; repair as needed before replacing parts.
  3. With a scan tool, observe live APP sensor data for channels A, B, and C while slowly depressing and releasing the pedal; compare the C channel values to the other channels for correlation and smoothness.
  4. Back-probe the sensor C signal wire and verify voltage sweeps smoothly with pedal movement and stays within the specified range; check reference voltage and ground circuits at the sensor.
  5. If wiring and signals test normally but the code persists, substitute a known-good APP sensor or pedal assembly to isolate a sensor failure from a PCM input fault.
  6. Only after confirming correct sensor output, intact wiring, and proper mechanical pedal operation, evaluate the PCM input circuit as a last resort.
