P0133 means the upstream oxygen sensor on Bank 1 (Sensor 1, before the catalytic converter) is switching between rich and lean more slowly than the powertrain control module expects. A healthy sensor should react quickly to changes in exhaust oxygen content; this code flags a delayed or sluggish response. It does not mean the sensor circuit is open or shorted, only that its reaction time is out of specification.

1. Aging or contaminated upstream oxygen sensor

The sensor element naturally wears over time or can be contaminated by oil, coolant, silicone, or fuel additives, which slows its voltage transitions and is the most common cause of P0133.

  1. Confirm the code and review freeze-frame data; note any companion codes related to misfire, fuel trim, or other oxygen sensors.
  2. Visually inspect the Bank 1 Sensor 1 wiring harness and connector for corrosion, damage, or poor connection, and listen/feel for exhaust leaks near the sensor.
  3. View live data: the upstream sensor should switch rapidly between approximately 0.1 V and 0.9 V; a stuck or slowly cycling signal indicates a weak sensor.
  4. Check short-term and long-term fuel trims; large positive or negative trims point to an air/fuel mixture problem rather than a bad sensor.
  5. Test sensor response by inducing a small controlled enrichment or vacuum change; if the sensor voltage barely moves, the sensor or its circuit is suspect.
