OBD-II code P0108 indicates the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor is sending a signal voltage to the powertrain control module (PCM) that is higher than the expected range. The MAP sensor reports engine load by measuring manifold vacuum/pressure, and a persistently high reading points to a sensor, wiring, or circuit problem. The PCM uses this incorrect high-pressure signal to calculate fuel delivery and ignition timing, which can noticeably affect drivability and emissions.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed MAP sensor

The sensor's internal circuitry can fail or the sensing element can stick, causing it to output an abnormally high voltage. This is the single most common cause of P0108.

2. Open in the sensor ground circuit

If the MAP sensor's ground path is broken, the signal line floats toward the 5-volt reference, producing a sustained high reading. Corroded or loose ground terminals are frequent culprits.

3. Open or shorted signal wire

A broken signal wire or one shorted to the 5-volt reference will pull the reported voltage high. Wiring damage from heat, abrasion, or rodent activity is a common source.

4. Damaged or corroded connector

Bent pins, pushed-back terminals, moisture intrusion, or corrosion at the MAP sensor harness connector can disrupt the signal and ground paths, leading to an out-of-range high reading.

5. Clogged or restricted vacuum port

Less common for a 'high' code, but a blocked reference port in some systems can cause abnormal pressure readings. More typically, vacuum leaks cause low readings rather than high.

6. Faulty PCM (engine control module)

Rare. The PCM itself can fail internally, but this should only be considered after sensor and wiring have been thoroughly ruled out. Replacing the computer first is almost always a mistake.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Connect a scan tool and observe live MAP sensor voltage with the key on (engine off), at idle, and at wide-open throttle. Compare to manufacturer specifications; a reading pinned near 4.5–5.0 V is a strong indicator of a circuit-high fault.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the MAP sensor connector and harness, looking for damaged insulation, corrosion, bent pins, or moisture. Repair any obvious wiring faults before replacing parts.
  3. Backprobe the sensor connector with the ignition on to verify proper 5-volt reference and a good ground at the PCM. Absence of either confirms a wiring or PCM power/ground issue rather than a bad sensor.
  4. With the engine running, lightly tap the MAP sensor and wiggle the harness while watching live data. Sudden jumps or a stuck-high value during this test point to a faulty sensor or intermittent connection.
  5. Inspect the vacuum hose or intake passage feeding the MAP sensor for cracks, disconnections, or blockages that could affect pressure readings.
  6. If all sensor and wiring tests pass, the fault may lie inside the PCM. This is uncommon and should only be pursued after every other possibility has been eliminated.
