P0087 — Fuel Railsystem Pressure Too Low Bank 1

P0087 indicates the engine control module has detected that fuel rail pressure on Bank 1 is below the value it commanded. In plain terms, the engine is not receiving the fuel pressure it needs to run correctly, whether because the fuel system cannot build the pressure or because pressure is being lost somewhere downstream.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Restricted or overdue fuel filter

A clogged fuel filter is one of the most common and simplest causes, particularly on diesel applications and on any vehicle that has missed scheduled fuel-filter service. It starves the rail of volume before any sensor ever reads low pressure.

2. Weak or failing low-pressure (lift/transfer) fuel pump

The pump feeding the high-pressure pump or fuel rail cannot maintain flow, so rail pressure sags. This is very common on higher-mileage vehicles and on diesels that rely on an electric lift pump to supply the high-pressure pump.

3. Failing high-pressure fuel pump

On direct-injection engines, internal wear or a failed pressure control element in the high-pressure pump can prevent it from building the commanded rail pressure even when the low-side supply is adequate.

4. Faulty fuel pressure regulator or fuel pressure control valve

A regulator stuck open or a metering/control valve that is not sealing correctly bleeds pressure off the rail. These components are common failure points on both GDI gasoline and common-rail diesel systems.

5. Wiring, connector, or fuel rail pressure sensor fault

Corroded pins, chafed wires, or a failed FRP sensor can falsely report low pressure to the ECM or disable fuel-pressure control, setting the code even when mechanical pressure is acceptable.

6. Fuel leaks — including injector return leaks and supply-side leaks

External leaks in supply lines, the rail, or — very commonly on diesel common-rail — internal leak-back through worn injectors will bleed off pressure. Diesel injector return-leak testing is a standard part of diagnosing this code.

7. Engine control module (PCM/ECM) fault

The PCM is rarely the cause of P0087. It should only be considered after every fuel-side mechanical, pump, regulator, and sensor/wiring issue has been ruled out with hard data.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Connect a scan tool and view live data: compare commanded fuel rail pressure to actual fuel rail pressure at idle, during snap acceleration, and on key-on/engine-off (residual/hold pressure check).
  2. Verify the scan-tool rail pressure reading with a mechanical fuel pressure gauge installed at the rail's test port. This confirms whether the low reading is real or a sensor/wiring artifact.
  3. Perform a low-side fuel volume and pressure test: confirm the lift/transfer pump can deliver adequate volume and pressure with the fuel filter in line, then re-test with the filter bypassed to isolate a restriction.
  4. Inspect the FRP sensor and any pressure regulator/control valve wiring and connectors for corrosion, chafing, or pin damage, and check for proper reference voltage and ground at the sensor.
  5. Inspect the fuel supply lines, fuel rail, and injector return lines for external leaks. On diesel common-rail engines, perform an injector return-rate test to identify leaking injectors.
  6. Only after mechanical, pump, regulator, and sensor/wiring causes are ruled out, and live data shows the ECM is driving pressure low when it should not, should a PCM/ECM fault be considered.

Can I keep driving with P0087?

You can usually limp a short distance at reduced power, but the engine may stall, run very roughly, or stay in limp mode. Continued running with insufficient fuel pressure can damage injectors and the high-pressure pump, so the code should be addressed promptly.

Is replacing the PCM/ECM the fix for P0087?

No. Replacing the engine computer is almost never the correct repair for P0087. The vast majority of cases are a fuel filter, a fuel pump, a pressure regulator or control valve, a leaking injector, or a sensor/wiring issue. Some shops and online sources suggest a PCM replacement for this code, but that is usually a costly and incorrect diagnosis — confirm a real fuel-side problem with gauge and flow data before ever replacing a computer.

Does P0087 only affect diesel engines?

No. The code applies to both gasoline direct-injection and diesel common-rail engines, but it is reported far more often on diesels because their fuel systems are more sensitive to low-side supply problems, lift-pump failure, and injector return leakage.

Could bad or contaminated fuel cause P0087?

Contaminated fuel or water in fuel typically plugs the fuel filter, which then sets the code — the underlying problem is the restricted filter, not the fuel itself. Air intrusion on the suction side of a weak lift pump can also produce low rail pressure, so the suction-side lines and seals should be inspected.
