Code P0068 indicates that the engine control module (ECM) has detected a mismatch between the expected airflow based on throttle position and the actual airflow measured by the mass air flow (MAF) or manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor. This correlation error suggests the engine is receiving more or less air than predicted, often due to intake leaks, sensor faults, or throttle body issues.

5. Faulty throttle position sensor or throttle body assembly

A worn or electrically noisy throttle position sensor can send erratic signals, making the ECM believe the throttle is at a different angle than it actually is.

6. Wiring or connector issues

Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring/connectors in the MAF, MAP, or throttle position sensor circuits can cause intermittent or incorrect signals.

7. ECM/PCM software or hardware failure

In very rare cases, an internal fault in the engine control module can cause erroneous correlation calculations. This should only be considered after all other causes are thoroughly ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for additional trouble codes and record freeze frame data to identify the conditions when P0068 was set.
  2. Visually inspect all intake air ducts, vacuum hoses, and the intake manifold for cracks, loose connections, or signs of leaks. Use a smoke machine or carburetor cleaner to pinpoint leaks if necessary.
  3. Remove and inspect the throttle body for carbon buildup. Clean the throttle plate and bore with an appropriate cleaner, then perform the manufacturer's idle relearn procedure if applicable.
  4. Check live data with a scan tool: compare MAF (or MAP) readings at idle and under load to known good specifications. Look for erratic or implausible values.
  5. Monitor throttle position sensor (TPS) voltage or percentage while slowly opening and closing the throttle. The signal should change smoothly without dropouts or spikes.
  6. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the MAF, MAP, and TPS sensors. Look for chafed wires, bent pins, corrosion, or loose terminals. Repair as needed.
  7. If no other cause is found, verify ECM power and ground circuits. As a last resort, consider an ECM reflash or replacement, but only after confirming all sensor inputs and outputs are correct.
