P0058 means the engine control module has detected an abnormally high voltage condition on the heater control circuit for the downstream oxygen sensor on Bank 2. The sensor heater helps the oxygen sensor reach operating temperature quickly, and a high-voltage reading usually indicates an open or high-resistance heater element, a short to voltage in the wiring, or a connection fault. The malfunction indicator lamp will normally illuminate and the vehicle may fail an emissions test.

Loose, corroded, or damaged terminals in the sensor connector or harness can alter circuit resistance and produce the high-voltage signal that sets the code.

4. Incorrect oxygen sensor installed

A replacement sensor with heater resistance or pin configuration that does not match the application can cause the PCM to report a high heater circuit condition.

5. PCM heater driver or internal fault

Rarely, the PCM's low-side heater driver may fail or misreport the circuit state; this should only be considered after the sensor and all wiring have been thoroughly tested and ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the Bank 2 Sensor 2 oxygen sensor connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, chafing, or melted insulation.
  2. Disconnect the sensor and measure heater element resistance across the heater pins; compare the reading to manufacturer specification and replace the sensor if it is open or out of range.
  3. With the sensor and PCM disconnected, check the heater power and control wires for unwanted continuity to battery voltage or ground, and repair any short-to-voltage condition found.
  4. Verify the heater receives battery voltage on the power feed and that the ground/return path is clean; repair supply or ground faults if present.
  5. If the sensor, wiring, and power supply are all correct, monitor the PCM heater driver command; a failed PCM driver is uncommon and should be confirmed before module replacement.
  6. Clear the code and run the OBD-II oxygen sensor heater monitor to confirm the repair.
