P0048 means the powertrain control module has detected a higher-than-specified voltage or resistance in the turbocharger/supercharger boost control solenoid/actuator command circuit. It is an electrical circuit fault and most often points to a short-to-voltage, a failing boost control solenoid, or wiring damage rather than a mechanical turbo failure.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Boost control solenoid internal short or failure

The solenoid valve itself can short internally or stick, pulling the circuit voltage above the expected range and setting P0048.

2. Wiring short-to-voltage in the boost control circuit

A wire rubbed through, pinched, or melted against a power feed can feed battery voltage back into the boost control signal line.

3. Corroded or damaged connector / pins

Poor terminal contact, pushed-out pins, or corrosion at the solenoid or PCM connector can alter circuit resistance and produce a high-side fault.

4. Binding or shorted electronic turbo/vane actuator

On vehicles with an electronic actuator, a shorted motor or position sensor can raise circuit voltage and trigger the code.

5. PCM control driver fault

A rare internal fault in the PCM's boost-control driver can command or read the circuit incorrectly, but this should only be considered after wiring and the actuator are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve freeze-frame data and confirm P0048 is the active fault; inspect the boost control solenoid connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, or chafing.
  2. Measure the boost control solenoid resistance and compare it to the manufacturer's specification; replace it if it is shorted or out of range.
  3. With the key on and engine off, check for unexpected battery voltage on the control circuit while the PCM is not commanding the solenoid; if present, trace and repair the short-to-voltage.
  4. Use a scan tool to command the boost control solenoid on and off, verifying it clicks/operates and that commanded versus actual boost behavior is reasonable.
  5. If the solenoid, wiring, and actuator test normal, verify the PCM control signal; reflash or replace the PCM only after all other causes are eliminated.
