P0035 indicates the powertrain control module has detected a higher-than-expected voltage on the electrical circuit that controls the turbocharger or supercharger bypass valve solenoid. This condition typically results from a short to voltage in the wiring or an internal electrical fault within the solenoid itself. The bypass valve manages boost pressure by rerouting air when the throttle closes or under specific operating conditions.

1. Faulty bypass valve control solenoid

The solenoid coil can develop an internal short to power or fail electrically, causing the control circuit voltage to read higher than the PCM expects.

2. Short to voltage in control circuit wiring

The control wire may have chafed, pinched, or melted against a battery voltage source, or shorted to an adjacent power feed within the harness.

3. Connector corrosion or terminal damage

Moisture, oxidation, or salt intrusion inside the solenoid connector can create a conductive path between the control pin and a power pin.

4. Open or poor solenoid ground path

A compromised ground connection can alter circuit voltage characteristics and trigger a high-voltage fault under certain PCM monitoring strategies.

5. PCM control circuit failure

An internal driver fault within the PCM is a rare possibility and should only be considered after the solenoid and entire external circuit are proven fault-free.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the bypass valve solenoid, electrical connector, and nearby wiring harness for damage, chafing, burns, or corrosion.
  2. Measure the solenoid coil resistance and compare it to the manufacturer specification; an internal short or open indicates solenoid failure.
  3. With the ignition on, use a multimeter to check the control circuit for unwanted battery voltage that would indicate a short to power.
  4. Perform a wiggle test on the harness between the solenoid and PCM while monitoring circuit voltage to locate intermittent shorts or opens.
  5. Verify the solenoid ground path is clean and tight; if the solenoid and wiring are proven normal, test the PCM output before considering module replacement.
