P0005 indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an open circuit in the fuel shutoff valve control circuit. The fuel shutoff valve is an electrically operated solenoid used to cut or regulate fuel flow; an 'open' reading means the PCM sees a break in electrical continuity somewhere in that circuit, preventing normal valve operation.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Damaged or disconnected wiring/connector to the fuel shutoff valve

An open circuit code most often points to a broken wire, chafed harness, or loose/corroded connector between the PCM and the fuel shutoff valve solenoid. This is the most common cause of P0005.

2. Failed fuel shutoff valve solenoid (open coil)

The solenoid coil itself can fail open, meaning it no longer has electrical continuity. Testing resistance across the valve terminals is a quick way to confirm.

3. Corroded or backed-out connector pins

Moisture intrusion and corrosion at the valve connector, or pins that have worked loose, create the same open-circuit condition the PCM is reporting.

4. Blown fuse or poor power/ground supply to the circuit

Although P0005 specifically references an open circuit rather than voltage supply, a missing power feed or a bad ground at the valve will be read by the PCM as an open.

5. Mechanical failure of the valve preventing electrical contact

Internal valve damage, contamination, or a stuck plunger can also present as an open circuit if the failure damages the coil windings.

6. PCM driver or internal control fault

Rarely, the transistor driver inside the PCM that controls the valve can fail. PCM replacement is among the least likely causes and should only be considered after every other possibility has been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Connect a scan tool and document all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data; clear codes and verify P0005 returns.
  2. Locate the fuel shutoff valve and visually inspect the wiring harness and connector for damage, chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.
  3. With the ignition off and the connector disconnected, measure resistance across the valve solenoid terminals and compare to the manufacturer's specification; an infinite reading confirms an open coil.
  4. With the connector plugged in and the key on, backprobe the circuit to verify proper power and ground at the valve, using a wiring diagram for pin identification.
  5. Check the fuse and any related relays feeding the circuit, and inspect splice points and grounds for corrosion or looseness.
  6. If wiring, connector, and valve all test good, monitor the PCM command to the valve with a lab scope or voltmeter; absence of a driver signal points to a PCM internal fault.

Not exactly. P0005 specifically flags an electrical open in the valve's control circuit. A fuel pressure issue can be a downstream symptom, but the code itself is reporting an electrical fault, not a pressure reading.

Can I keep driving with code P0005?

It depends on the vehicle and whether the shutoff valve can still default to a safe position. In many cases the engine will stall or refuse to start, so extended driving is usually not possible. Have it diagnosed promptly.

Do I need to replace the PCM for P0005?

No. Although some online sources may suggest replacing the engine computer, that is almost never the correct fix. The overwhelming majority of P0005 cases are caused by wiring, connectors, or the valve solenoid itself.
