C0505 is a chassis code indicating a correlation error from the left front wheel speed sensor, meaning the signal it produces is inconsistent with the expected pattern or with the readings from the other wheel speed sensors. Because this sensor feeds the ABS, traction control, and often the stability control systems, a correlation fault typically disables those functions and illuminates a warning light.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty left front wheel speed sensor

The sensor itself is the most common cause of a correlation code. Internal failure or a weakening output signal can produce a waveform that does not match the expected pattern or the other wheels.

2. Damaged or contaminated tone ring (reluctor)

Chips, cracks, rust scaling, or metallic debris on the toothed ring the sensor reads from will distort the signal and trigger a correlation fault, even when the sensor is good.

3. Wiring or connector fault between the sensor and the ABS module

Chafed, broken, or stretched wires, or loose, spread, or corroded pins in the connector, are a frequent cause. Inspect the harness along the suspension and at any flex points.

4. Excessive air gap between the sensor and tone ring

A loose mounting, worn wheel bearing, or improperly seated sensor can allow the gap to grow beyond specification, weakening the signal enough to set a correlation error.

5. Contamination on the magnetic sensor tip

Brake dust, fine iron particles, road grime, or road salt buildup on the tip of a magnetic-style sensor can interfere with the magnetic field and produce an irregular waveform.

6. ABS / brake system control module

Rarely, the module that interprets the wheel speed signal can be at fault. Module failure is statistically uncommon and should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, tone ring, and air gap have all been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and record any related ABS or wheel speed sensor codes present on other wheels.
  2. Visually inspect the left front wheel speed sensor, its mounting, its connector, and the harness from the wheel well to the ABS module for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  3. Inspect the tone ring on the hub or CV joint for cracks, missing teeth, heavy rust, or metallic debris, and confirm the sensor is fully seated and tight.
  4. Measure the sensor's resistance and insulation to ground, comparing the value to the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Use a lab scope or scan-tool graph to view the left front wheel speed signal at various vehicle speeds and compare its waveform shape, frequency, and amplitude to the other three wheels.
  6. Check the air gap and hub runout if a magnetic-style sensor is used, and verify the wheel bearing is not allowing excessive axial or radial play.

Is the engine computer (PCM) usually the cause of C0505?

No. C0505 is a chassis/ABS code and the engine PCM has little or no role in it. The ABS module is occasionally implicated, but in real-world cases the sensor, its wiring, or the tone ring are responsible for the vast majority of C0505 faults. Replacing the PCM for this code is almost never the correct repair.

Do I have to replace the hub assembly to fix this?

Not always. If the tone ring is integrated into the hub and is damaged, hub replacement may be required. If the tone ring is separate, or the problem is the sensor, its wiring, or contamination, the hub does not need to be replaced.

Why does the light come back after I clear the code?

Clearing the code only erases the stored fault; it does not repair the underlying cause. The light will return as soon as the system again detects the same correlation problem, which is why proper diagnosis of the sensor, wiring, and tone ring is important.
