What causes it — most likely first

1. Wiring or connector fault in module communication circuits

Corroded, damaged, or poorly seated connectors and harnesses between the engine control module and the brake/traction-control module interrupt the serial-data signal that carries delivered torque information.

2. Faulty electronic brake/traction-control module

The module that receives and interprets the delivered driving torque message may fail internally, set false codes, or misread valid data from the engine control module.

3. Engine control module software/calibration issue

An outdated or corrupted calibration can cause the ECM to broadcast an implausible torque value, or to stop broadcasting it, even though the module hardware is intact.

4. Low or unstable system voltage

Weak batteries, poor grounds, or charging-system problems can disrupt bus communication and cause transient invalid-data faults across multiple modules.

5. PCM/ECM internal failure

A genuine engine-control-module fault is possible but uncommon; it should only be considered after wiring, connectors, the brake-control module, and software have been ruled out.

  4. Verify the brake/traction-control module powers up correctly and receives other expected data-bus messages
  5. Confirm the engine control module has the latest available calibration and reflash if applicable before condemning hardware
  6. Test or substitute the electronic brake/traction-control module only after wiring and software are eliminated, and consider the PCM/ECM last
