C0052 — Steering Wheel Position Sensor Signal

C0052 indicates the control module has detected an invalid, erratic, or out-of-range signal from the steering wheel position (steering angle) sensor. This sensor reports how far and in which direction the steering wheel is turned, and data is used by stability control, ABS, electric power steering, and other chassis systems. A fault can trigger warning lights and may disable or limit related driver-assistance functions.

1. Failed or drifting steering wheel position/angle sensor

The internal sensor element can wear, lose calibration, or produce an erratic signal, making it the most common cause of C0052.

2. Wiring or connector fault at the steering column

Chafed, corroded, or loose wires and poor pin connections can interrupt or distort the sensor signal before it reaches the control module.

3. Incorrect calibration or steering wheel not centered

After an alignment, suspension repair, or battery disconnect, the sensor may need recalibration; an off-center wheel can produce an implausible signal.

4. Clockspring or internal column harness damage

If the sensor signal passes through a clockspring or rotating column harness, repeated steering wheel rotation can damage those internal circuits.

5. Interference from related steering/suspension faults

A binding steering column, damaged tie rod, or mismatched tire sizes can make the reported angle behave abnormally, though this is less common.

6. Control module fault

The ABS, ESC, or EPS module interpreting the signal can fail, but this is rare and should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and calibration are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data from chassis modules to see if related ABS, ESC, or EPS faults are present
  2. Visually inspect the steering angle/position sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, or looseness
  3. View live data while slowly turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock; the reported angle should change smoothly and match the actual wheel position
  4. Center the steering wheel with the wheels straight, then perform the manufacturer steering angle sensor calibration/reset procedure with a scan tool
  5. If calibration fails or the signal is erratic, test sensor supply/reference voltage and ground, check continuity of the signal circuit, and replace the sensor if out of specification
  6. Only after confirming the sensor, wiring, and calibration are correct, test or consider the receiving control module as a last resort

Can a wheel alignment cause this code?
