C0020 is a chassis code indicating that the anti-lock brake system (ABS) control module has detected a fault in the ABS pump motor control circuit. The ABS hydraulic pump builds and modulates brake fluid pressure during ABS activation, and the module monitors whether the motor responds correctly to its commands. When this code sets, ABS function is typically disabled and the ABS warning lamp is illuminated.
The internal electric motor of the ABS hydraulic unit wears out from heat, age, and brush wear, and is the most common single cause of C0020. When the motor cannot spin up to commanded speed or draws abnormal current, the module logs this code.
The relay that supplies battery power to the pump motor has contacts that pit, weld, or lose continuity over time. A failing relay can prevent the pump from running or allow it to run at the wrong time.
The pump motor's high-current connector is exposed to underhood heat, moisture, and road salt. Corroded pins, broken wires near the harness bend, or loose connector locks create voltage drop or open circuits that the module sees as a pump fault.
A dedicated fuse supplies the ABS pump, and it can blow from a momentary short or aging. A simple blown fuse will set the same code as a dead motor and is worth checking before replacing parts.
The ABS pump draws very high current. If battery voltage drops below what the module expects when commanding the pump on, the module may interpret this as a motor or circuit fault and set C0020.
The module that drives the pump relay and monitors motor current can fail internally, especially on higher-mileage vehicles. This is a real but less common cause and should only be considered after the motor, relay, wiring, and power supply have been verified.
Almost never. The ABS pump motor is controlled by the ABS or electronic brake control module (EBCM), not the powertrain control module. Replacing the PCM will not fix C0020, and shops that recommend a PCM replacement for this code without first testing the pump motor, relay, wiring, and EBCM are usually misdiagnosing the problem.
Conventional (non-ABS) braking is usually still functional, so the car can be driven to a shop. However, ABS, traction control, and stability control will typically be disabled, so stopping distances on slick or loose surfaces can be longer and the wheels can lock under hard braking.
On most vehicles the pump motor is integrated into the hydraulic modulator assembly and is not serviceable separately, so the common repair is a complete ABS modulator or hydraulic unit. In some applications the motor can be replaced separately, but this depends on the specific vehicle and should be confirmed before buying parts.
Because the failure is detected by the ABS module's internal monitoring, the code usually returns immediately on the next drive cycle once the underlying fault is present. A scan tool capable of clearing ABS codes is normally required, and the code should not be considered fixed until it stays out after multiple drive cycles.
