OBD-II code B1318 indicates that a control module—most commonly the body control module (BCM) or powertrain control module (PCM)—has detected battery or system voltage below a calibrated threshold (typically under roughly 11.5–12.0 V for a sustained period). It is a symptom of an underlying power supply or charging system problem rather than a fault in the module that reported it. Persistent low voltage can also cause other seemingly unrelated codes to set.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Weak, aged, or discharged battery

The most common cause. A battery with reduced capacity may hold surface charge but drop below the module's low-voltage threshold under load, especially at engine start or with accessories on.

2. Faulty alternator or charging system

An alternator that is not producing adequate voltage (typically 13.5–14.5 V at idle) will allow system voltage to sag. Worn brushes, a failed voltage regulator, or a slipping drive belt are typical culprits.

3. Corroded, loose, or damaged battery terminals and cables

High resistance at the battery connections or in the positive/negative cables causes a measurable voltage drop between the battery and the modules, which the BCM interprets as low system voltage.

4. Poor chassis or engine ground connections

A corroded or loose ground strap between the engine, body, and battery can produce the same low-voltage-at-the-module symptom even when the battery itself is healthy.

5. Excessive parasitic (key-off) battery drain

An accessory, aftermarket device, or stuck relay that continues to draw current while the vehicle is parked will discharge the battery overnight and trigger the code on the next start cycle.

6. Failing or internally high-resistance BCM/PCM (rare)

In uncommon cases, a control module with internal shorting or excessive current draw can pull system voltage low. Module failure should only be considered after the battery, cables, grounds, alternator, and parasitic draw have all been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Measure battery voltage with the engine off after the vehicle has sat; a healthy, fully charged battery reads approximately 12.4–12.7 V. Below 12.2 V indicates a discharged or weak battery that should be load-tested.
  2. Measure charging system voltage at the battery with the engine running at 1,500–2,000 rpm and accessories on; it should be roughly 13.5–14.5 V. Outside that range points to the alternator or voltage regulator.
  3. Inspect battery posts, cable ends, and the main ground strap for corrosion, looseness, or fraying, and check for voltage drop across each connection under load.
  4. Perform a parasitic draw test by measuring current at the battery cable with the vehicle fully asleep; the typical maximum is around 50 mA (verify against the manufacturer's spec).
  5. Load-test the battery and, if borderline, test the alternator's output under load to confirm charging capacity.
  6. If voltage and grounds are correct at the battery but a module still logs B1318, inspect that module's dedicated power and ground feeds for high resistance before considering module replacement.

Is it safe to keep driving with code B1318?
