B0002 — Driver Frontal Stage 2 Deployment Control

Generic OBD-II · all makesBody

B0002 is a body/chassis code indicating a malfunction in the driver front airbag stage 2 deployment circuit. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) has detected an open circuit, high resistance, or short circuit in the wiring or components that control the second-stage inflator for the driver-side airbag.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed clock spring

The clock spring in the steering column wears out over time, breaking electrical contact for the driver airbag circuit including stage 2. This is the most common failure point.

2. Faulty driver airbag module (stage 2 squib)

The internal pyrotechnic squib for stage 2 within the driver airbag assembly has failed, creating high resistance or open circuit.

3. Damaged wiring harness

The wiring between the SRS module and driver airbag is damaged, corroded, or has broken conductors, often due to steering column movement or age.

4. Corroded or loose connectors

Connector pins at the airbag module or steering column harness are corroded, dirty, or not making proper contact.

5. Low system voltage

Low battery voltage or poor ground connections can cause the SRS module to incorrectly detect a deployment circuit fault.

6. SRS control module fault

The airbag control module itself has failed. This is rare and should only be considered after all other causes are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for SRS codes and record all freeze frame data; note if B0002 is accompanied by other airbag codes
  2. Verify battery voltage is above 12.4V and check for proper ground connections
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the driver airbag connector and wiring at the steering column
  4. Check the clock spring resistance using an ohmmeter at the airbag connector (refer to factory specs)
  5. Measure the resistance of the driver airbag stage 1 and stage 2 squibs at the connector
  6. If equipment available, perform staged deployment circuit test using manufacturer-specific SRS scanner

Frequently asked

Can I just replace the PCM/ECM to fix this code?

No. The SRS module is separate from the powertrain control module. Replacing the PCM will not fix B0002 and wastes money. The fault is almost always in the airbag circuit components (clock spring, airbag module, or wiring), not the control module.

Is it safe to drive with this code?

The vehicle is drivable, but the driver front airbag may not deploy correctly in a crash. This is a safety system fault that should be diagnosed and repaired promptly.

Can I clear the code and see if it comes back?

Clearing the code may temporarily turn off the light, but if the underlying fault exists (bad clock spring, faulty squib, damaged wiring), the code will return. Proper diagnosis is needed.

Do I need a special scanner to diagnose this?

Yes. A generic OBD-II scanner can read the B0002 code, but diagnosing which stage 2 component failed requires a scanner capable of accessing SRS/ airbag system data or manual electrical testing. Generic scanners cannot perform full SRS diagnostics.
